Prior Extinction Getting Started
Survive your first hours in Jacys Studios’ hardcore dinosaur alpha without wasting growth or Amber.
Prior Extinction punishes careless first lives. The map looks open, the roster looks huge, and the Recode combat kit feels sharp—but most early deaths come from empty Wellbeing, bad biome temperature, or walking into a contested water hole as a baby. This getting started guide is the onboarding path for Roblox Survival: pick a sensible first playable, learn the survival loop, protect growth, and understand why Amber is a long game.
What you are signing up for
Jacys Studios built a realism-leaning dinosaur survival sandbox with roughly forty-five playables, eleven biomes, pack social tools, nesting, quests, Masteries, and achievements. The game is still public alpha. Systems can shift after Recode patches, so treat numbers as directional and habits as durable. Your job in hour one is not to unlock an apex. Your job is to stay alive long enough to feel how Nutrition, Energy, Temperature, Social, Cleanliness, and Sun interact while you earn baseline Amber.
If you need a visual walkthrough after reading, the mid-article video titled Prior Extinction Tutorial covers core loop moments without replacing the text systems below.
First session checklist
- Join Survival (the mode that earns Amber). Sandbox has been discussed historically for freer play, but this wiki’s economy advice targets Survival.
- Open controls and keybinds once so WASD, E eat/drink, R rest, Z sleep, N Wellbeing, and mobile’s circular menu are familiar.
- Pick a starter you understand: modest diet pressure, biomes you can read, and combat that does not demand perfect timing.
- Spawn, then immediately scan for water, preferred food, shade or sun as needed, and escape cover.
- Press N and learn icon brightness: bright icons mean that pillar is low; transparent icons mean it is healthy.
- Eat and drink with E when prompts allow, rest with R when stamina is poor, and sleep with Z only after resting when you need Energy Wellbeing.
- Avoid trophy hunting. Babies lose to adults that treat water as a kill zone.
- After a stable stretch, skim how to get Amber so you know passive income, quests, and Mastery rewards.
Choosing your first dinosaur
Prior Extinction’s roster spans niches: fast carnivores, heavy herbivores, omnivores, and semi-aquatic threats introduced or reworked around Recode. For a first life, prefer species whose Information tab in the Wellbeing menu shows temperature and diet ranges you can satisfy near common starter biomes. If a dinosaur demands extreme cold or constant social packing and you are solo, you will fight the UI more than predators.
Do not unlock the most expensive animal you can barely afford. Amber spent on a dinosaur you cannot keep alive is Amber that could have funded a skin or a species that matches your schedule. Read preferred biomes on the biomes and map guide before traveling far from spawn.
The survival loop you must memorize
Movement and sensing come first. WASD moves, Space jumps, X trots, C crouches, F toggles senses, and B burrows when your species allows. Combat uses LMB and RMB attacks plus Middle Mouse for specials—details live on the combat guide. Social calls use 1, 2, and 3 for aggressive, friendly, and broadcast roars. Hold Alt for a free cursor when you need to click UI without fully opening menus.
Hunger and thirst are not optional flavor. Empty Nutrition wrecks Amber and growth multipliers and can stack with other empty pillars into a brutal -50% Amber and Growth situation when Wellbeing collapses. Keep food deposits and water routes in mind even when you are “just exploring.” Cleanliness (T to clean when available) and Sun exposure matter more than new players expect; treat them as real stats, not cosmetics.
Energy recovers through rest and especially sleep. Sleeping requires you to already be resting, replenishes stamina and health faster, and is the path that restores Energy Wellbeing. Ignoring sleep while sprint-fighting every corpse is a classic way to stall growth.
Wellbeing before glory
Open the full Wellbeing window with N when you have a safe moment. Tabs typically cover Wellbeing values, Information about your species’ preferences, Boosts showing live buffs or nerfs, and a large dinosaur readout. You do not need the full window every second—the bottom icons already shout when something is wrong.
Full Wellbeing is worth chasing: community documentation describes about +50% Amber and Growth, around +20% damage, infection/bleed/bone-break mitigation, and sharply reduced food and water drain. Empty Wellbeing flips the fantasy into roughly -50% Amber and Growth with matching combat and drain penalties. That swing is larger than most gamepasses for a careful player. Deep numbers and per-pillar effects are on Wellbeing explained.
Amber in your first week
Amber ticks passively each minute based on the dinosaur you are playing. Wellbeing, nest territory, and certain gamepasses multiply that rate. Quest, Mastery, and achievement payouts are especially valuable because passive Amber debuffs do not cut those rewards. Early on, do not obsess over peak amber-per-minute on an apex you cannot grow. Stabilize a mid-tier life, complete easy quests, and let Mastery stages drip Amber and discounts. Full economy strategy is in how to get Amber.
Spend Amber on dinosaurs and skins you will actually play. Some creatures also gate purchases behind Mastery progress on related species—plan unlocks with the growth and Mastery page instead of impulse buying.
Packs, nesting, and friends
You can survive solo, but packs unlock nesting and safer multiplayer growth. Nesting needs a male and female of the same species in one pack. If the male is Patriarch, promote the female to Elder before nesting. If the female is Matriarch, she can nest after inviting a male without granting Elder. Food deposited in the nest converts toward eggs; invite only players who own that dinosaur (and understand skin fallbacks). Full steps are on nesting and packs.
Recode mindset
The 2026 Recode reworked abilities, nesting presentation, and combat readability. Old muscle memory from pre-Recode clips can lie. Relearn special timings, respect new nest roles, and treat community PvP videos as ideas rather than patch-proof gospel. When Steam is mentioned in roadmaps, remember progress is not expected to transfer—your Roblox grind stays on Roblox.
Common beginner mistakes
- Ignoring bright Wellbeing icons until growth feels “broken.”
- Sleeping in the open at a famous water landmark.
- Traveling across temperature cliffs without checking Information preferences.
- Spending all Amber on a prestige dinosaur before learning combat spacing.
- Accepting nest invites for species you do not own.
- Treating Social as optional forever; many dinos want company or hate overcrowding—read the Information tab.
Finish your first adult life with a notebook of biome routes, food plants or prey habits, and which icons fail at night. Then specialize using the sibling guides linked above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about Prior Extinction on Roblox.
Is Prior Extinction free to play on Roblox?
Yes. It is a free-to-play Roblox experience by Jacys Studios. Optional gamepasses and Robux Amber purchases exist, but core Survival is playable without them.
Should I start in Survival or Sandbox?
Start in Survival if you care about Amber, unlocks, and the economy guides on this wiki. Sandbox has been mentioned for freer play historically.
What is the first menu I should learn?
Press N for Wellbeing and learn icon brightness. Then open the main menu with M for quests and controls text if you need rebinds.
Why is my growth so slow as a new player?
Low Wellbeing can slash Amber and Growth by large percentages. Fix temperature, nutrition, energy, cleanliness, social, and sun before blaming the species.
Can I nest alone?
No. Nesting needs a male and female of the same species in a pack with the correct Elder or Matriarch setup. See the nesting guide for roles.
Does the tutorial video replace this page?
No. The Prior Extinction Tutorial video helps visually, but Wellbeing math, nest roles, and Amber debuff rules are easier to keep straight in text.
